VALDOSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State looks to win its third straight game as the Blazers host North Alabama in Gulf South Conference action at 8:00 p.m. in The Complex on Saturday, January 24.
After suffering through a five-game losing streak that dropped VSU below .500, the Blazers have battled back to even on the year by winning their last two contests. Valdosta State is now 9-9 on the season and are 4-8 in league action. The Blazers have won each of the last two contests by a 67-66 margin, their first two games this year that they have claimed victory when scoring less than 70 points.
James Spencer, who recorded his fourth-double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds against Alabama-Huntsville Thursday, continues to lead Valdosta State on the season as he averages 14.9 points and 7.3 rebounds a game. Spencer is averaging 18.5 points and 8.1 rebounds a game over the course of VSU's last six contests. Meanwhile,
Blake Justice pours in 12.1 points a contest and
Colin Cook adds 10.6 points and 6.3 rebounds a game.
The Blazers average 75.7 points a game and shoot 42.7 percent from the floor and have relied heavily on their defense on the season. VSU averages nearly nine steals and 3.8 blocked shots a game and are forcing opponents into more than 16 turnovers per contest.
North Alabama is also 4-8 in GSC action on the season and is 7-11 overall. The Lions average 76.8 point a game on the season and are the GSC's top rebounding game at 40.6 per contest. UNA makes 45.2 percent of their field goal attempts on the year, but commit more than 17 turnovers a game.
Five Lion players average more than nine points a game, led by Nathan Spehr, who averages 14.3 a contest and leads the squad with 75 assists on the season. Brandon Herman adds 14.1 points a game while Jere Vucica adds 13.1 and Calvin Dade 12.9, to go along with a team-best 8.5 rebounds a game.
Valdosta State will honor its 2015 Athletics Hall of Fame class at halftime of Saturday's game.
