Lady Blazers Sizzle in 61-46 Win Over UAH

Senior Amy Duke scored 15 points and secured nine rebounds in VSU's second win of the year over the rival Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville.

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State women's basketball team snapped a five game losing streak in convincing fashion on Thursday night at The Complex, as the Lady Blazers used a sparkling second half to blister the Lady Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville 61-46.

The win evened VSU's record back up at 9-9 overall and boosted the team's league record to 5-7. Meanwhile, UAH fell to 8-10 overall and 5-7 in GSC play.

The Lady Chargers jumped out in front early in the contest to take a 9-5 lead at the 14:12 mark, but a free throw from Amy Duke and the first three point basket of the night from Maggie Davis knotted the score up at 9 apiece with 9:45 left in the first frame.

Davis committed her third foul late in the first half and was forced to the bench, but not before she scored ten first half points and helped Valdosta State outscore the Lady Chargers 18-11 over the course of the final nine minutes of the first period to put VSU up 27-20 at the half.

VSU kept momentum after the halftime break and spread their lead to 13 points at the 11:56 mark. Head Coach Kiley Hill's squad went on to close the contest out without trouble, thanks in large part to Duke, who finished the night with 15 points. The senior just missed her first double-double of the season after hauling in nine rebounds.

The Lady Blazers completely dominated the contest on the boards and snatched 41 rebounds against just 24 for Alabama-Huntsville.

April Thomas chipped in with 13 points in the game, and Davis matched Duke for a team-high 15 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field. Three of Davis' shots were from beyond the arc, which set a new career mark for the Indianapolis, Fla. native.

The Lady Blazers continue the current home stint with another GSC rivalry matchup against the North Alabama Lions, who will come to TitleTown on Saturday night to face VSU at 6:00 p.m..
