Men's Basketball Preview: Alabama-Huntsville

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State men's basketball team opens the second half of its Gulf South Conference schedule as the Blazers welcome conference leader Alabama-Huntsville to The Complex Thursday evening at 8:00 p.m.

The Blazers enter Thursday's game with an 8-9 record, including a 3-8 mark in GSC play. VSU is coming off a 67-66 victory over West Florida last weekend. The Blazers average 76.2 points per game and are shooting 42.3 percent from the floor. Valdosta State has relied  heavily on its defense this year as it averages 8.9 steals and 3.7 blocked shots per game.

James Spencer leads VSU with 14.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per game on the season. Spencer has been particularly successful as of late as he is averaging 18.4 points a game over the last five contests while shooting 47.4 percent from the floor during that span.

Colin Cook is just behind Spencer in both points and rebounds as he averages 10.6 points and 6.3 rebounds a game. He is now shooting 50.0 percent from the floor on the season, which is tops on the VSU team. Meanwhile, Blake Justice averages 12.6 points a game.

Alabama-Huntsville has won 13 of its first 17 games on the season and owns an 8-3 record in league games. The Charger are one of the better offensive teams in the conference as they average 73.4 points a game while shooting 46.5 percent from the floor.

Preston Herring, a transfer from Austin Peay, has spurred UAH on the season as he averages 12.0 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Seab Webster leads the squad with 17.2 points per game while Ronnie Mack adds 12.7 points an outing. Meanwhile, Greg Gardner has dished out 103 assists on the season.
