HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Valdosta State Lady Blazers capped off the weekend road trip with a Gulf South Conference victory after defeating the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville 65-60 on Saturday afternoon at Spragins Hall in Huntsville, Ala..
The win lifted VSU to 5-3, on the season and 1-1 in league competition. Meanwhile, the Chargers dropped to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in GSC play.
The Lady Blazers benefitted from another solid shooting performance, particularly from the arc, where VSU connected for 9-of-17 for a percentage of 52.9.
VSU scored quickly in the opening seconds of the contest with a three pointer by
April Thomas and extended the lead to five after a layup by
Imari Simpson.
The Chargers answered right back though with a three ball, layup combo of their own. With the score tied at 5-5, UAH took a two-point lead with a pair of free throws and held the advantage throughout the remainder of the first period
Facing a seven-point, 32-25 deficit at intermission, the Lady Blazers chipped away in the opening minutes of the second half before freshman
Jo Bistrow connected from long range to knot the contest up at 37-37 at the 16:15 mark.
Less than one minute later, Valdosta State reclaimed the lead for the first time since early in the first half, thanks to a pass from
Maggie Davis to Simpson that set up an easy lay-in.
UAH cut the deficit to one point within the final minute, but a huge three-point basket by senior
Jordan Waugh helped the Lady Blazers survive the late threat and secure the win.
Simpson finished with a team high of 17 points, while Bistrow added 14 of her own after shooting 3-of-6 from long distance.
In addition,
Amy Duke's team-high rebounds helped VSU win the battle on the glass with 35 total rebounds against 29 for UAH.
