Men's Basketball Preview: Shorter

VALDOSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State plays its final home game of the 2014 calendar year as the Blazers welcome Gulf South Conference foe Shorter to The Complex Monday evening at 8:00 p.m.

The Blazers enter Monday's contest after one of their better games of the season against Lee last Wednesday. VSU shot 50.0 percent from the floor against the Flames, which tied a season-best, and played impressive defense down the stretch of a tight game that saw Valdosta State tally a 75-70 victory while handing LU only its second loss of the season. Overall, VSU is 6-3 on the season and 1-2 in GSC action.

On the year, Valdosta State is averaging 77.2 points per game while allowing 75.9. VSU is shooting 42.3 percent from the floor, including 31.3 percent from beyond the three-point line. Defense has been a calling card for the Blazers on the year as VSU has tallied 84 steals on the year to go along with 40 blocks, nine of which came last Wednesday.

James Spencer enjoyed his best game as a Blazer against Lee last week as he connected on 10 of his 12 field goal attempts while scoring a season-best 24 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds and had a block and a steal in the game. On the year, Spencer leads the team with 13.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game and is shooting 48.0 percent.

Blake Justice and Jeremiah Hill also average double figures points as Justice adds 12.8 and Hill 10.3 per game. Colin Cook leads the GSC in blocked shots with 22 on the season, eight of which came last week against Lee.

Expect to see Shorter, which enters with a 6-3 record and a 1-2 mark in league play, push the ball on offense and use pressure defense as the Hawks average more than 86 points per game and shoot 49.9 percent from the floor. While SU allows a little over 80 points a game, it has also registered 77 steals on the season.

Senior guard Dedric Ware makes the Hawks soar as he leads the team with 20.1 points per game and has dished out 54 assists on the season. Jordan Jacks provides punch inside as he averages 16.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per game while Kordario Fleming contributes 12.8 points a game.
