VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State volleyball team got off to a slow start against West Georgia in Gulf South Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night, but the Blazers bounced back quickly to take the final three sets and pick up a 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22) win in Carrollton, Ga..
The win bumped the Blazers to a 19-7 overall record on the season and a 14-4 stint in GSC play. Meanwhile, the Wolves fell to 6-22 overall, 3-16 in conference play.
From the opening tip, VSU controlled the match and held a lead for a majority of the first set. The Wolves overcame the deficit late in the set, however, with an 8-3 run that allowed UWG to regain the lead and take the opening frame for a 25-23 win and a 1-0 lead.
Both teams traded points early in the second set to force a 10-10 tie, before a stretch of West Georgia miscues allowed the Blazers to rip off a 15-9 run and take the set 25-19.
The Wolves began the third set with two straight service aces, but the Blazers rebounded for eight straight points to force a UWG timeout. Following the timeout, West Georgia climbed back into the set and forced a 9-9 tie after a 7-1 run, but the Blazers regained composure and closed out the frame with a 16-9 run and a 25-18 win.
A tight fourth and final set turned in VSU's favor midway through the frame, when Head Coach
Mike Swan elected to take a timeout after falling behind 16-15. The Blazers went on to score 10 points against UWG's six to close out the match with a 25-22 win for Valdosta State.
Despite an overall hitting percentage of .156,
Kelsey Hedman helped keep the Blazers alive with a .474 effort that included 11 kills in 18 attempts. In addition,
Destiny Berry and
Ashley Lala paced VSU on defense with five blocks and 19 digs, respectively.
Regular season play concludes this weekend in Valdosta, Ga., as the Blazers welcome Mississippi College to town on Friday at 6:00 p.m. before the Tigers of West Alabama visit Titletown on Saturday for Senior Day at 2:00 p.m..
