Next Up for Blazer Volleyball: West Georgia

The Blazers will shoot for a season sweep of the West Georgia Wolves on Tuesday night in Carrollton, Ga.

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State volleyball team will wrap up the road portion of their 2014 regular season schedule this week with a match against West Georgia on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in Carrollton, Ga..

The Blazers (18-7, 12-4) are riding high after picking up two big Gulf South Conference victories over the weekend against North Alabama and Alabama-Huntsville, and Head Coach Mike Swan's squad currently sits at third place in the Gulf South Conference. With the league's top two teams - Shorter and West Florida - set to square off in Pensacola on Tuesday night, the table is set for the Blazers to regain some ground.

The Wolves (6-21, 3-15) have struggled this year with just three conference wins on the season. However, despite a 2-8 record over the course of their last 10 matches, the team does enter Tuesday night's matchup on the heels of a 3-1 victory over Mississippi College.

In contrast, the Blazers have gone 6-4 in the stretch of their last ten games and are enjoying outstanding seasons by juniors Jessica Codato and Kelsey Hedman. Setter Codato has posted impressive numbers in practically every major statistical category and ranks among the GSC's top five in both assists per set (9.66, 3rd) and service aces per set (0.42, 5th). Meanwhile, Hedman has made her presence known in practically every match with an average of 2.11 kills per set. Her kill total on the season falls just four shy of 200, and her 62 block total places her second on the team.

West Georgia relies heavily on outside hitter Tiffany Ancrum, who leads the team with a total of 208 kills on the year and averages 2.24 kills per set. The matchup against the Blazer defense should be an interesting one, as the VSU roster features one of the nation's top blockers in the form of Destiny Berry. The senior middle blocker recently surpassed the century mark in digs on the season and averages an incredible 1.20 blocks per set.
