Next Up for Blazer Volleyball: The South Region Crossover

The Blazers will face a tough test this weekend with contests against two of the top ranked teams in the AVCA

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State Blazer volleyball program continues non-conference action this weekend with a trip to Lakeland, Fla., where Florida Southern will host the 2014 South Regional Crossover Tournament. at Jenkins Field House.

The tournament, which will run from Oct. 16-18, will feature a total of eight teams with four of the teams coming from the Sunshine State Conference and the other four teams coming from the Gulf South Conference. There will be a total of 15 matches played at the event, as FSC will divide Jenkins Field House into two courts.

Valdosta State (13-3) will begin the weekend action on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. against Eckerd (10-8) before a second match at 5:00 p.m. against the American Volleyball Coaches Association's No. 1 ranked team, the Tampa Spartans (15-1). The Blazers will wrap up the tournament with two matches on Saturday against Saint Leo (12-7) at 11:00 a.m., followed by the No. 25 Florida Southern Moccasins (12-4) at 5:00 p.m.. VSU holds a 5-0 record against non-conference opponents this season and are currently riding a seven-game winning streak.

Key performers for the Blazers heading into the weekend include Ashley Lala at the libero position, who set a new career mark in digs in a single match with 25 against Rollins on Tuesday night at The Complex. All total, Lala has racked up 1232 career digs. Additionally, Destiny Berry bolsters the Blazer defense as the Gulf South Conference frontrunner in total blocks this season with a season total of 77. Berry's block tally tops West Florida's Sarah Scott, who represents second place in the GSC race for total blocks, by 24. The VSU middle blocker currently ranks 12th in the nation in blocks per set with an average of 1.31.

Jenna Kirkwood holds the team lead in kills for VSU with 213, a number which places her in second place overall in the GSC. Jessica Codato is also enjoying a tremendous senior season as the league's second best setter in terms of assists, while also ranking seventh among the top servers in the league with 23 service aces.
