VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State volleyball team continued to roll at home with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 26-24) win over the Rollins Tars in South Region volleyball action on Tuesday night at The Complex.
The Blazers set the tone right away in the contest with back-to-back block assists by
Destiny Berry and
Emily Matio for the first two points of the match. The Blazers went on to post 18 blocks in the match (two solo), which proved to be a key factor in the win.
"I knew going in that this one was going to be really tough match, but our blocking really got with it again tonight," said Head Coach
Mike Swan after the match. "We did especially well in the first and second game, where we put up some big blocks and caused them some trouble."
Jessica Codato continued to shine for the Blazers with another balanced performance. The senior setter tallied 48 assists, but supplied a spark on the attack as well with five kills and three service aces. In addition, Codato added one block and seven digs to help support the solid defensive effort by the red and black.
Ashley Lala delivered a stellar night for VSU on defense with 25 digs, which marked a new career high for the senior libero. The total represented the fifth time this season that Lala has racked up 22 or more digs.
Jenna Kirkwood led the way again on offense with 18 kills, while
Lea Jaklen added eleven.
Kelsey Hedman eclipsed the .300 hitting percentage mark for the seventh time this season with a .304 effort and performed well down the stretch for the Blazers with nine kills, seven of which came in the final two sets.
Valdosta State improved their record to 13-3 overall with the victory, and bumped their current winning streak to seven straight games. The triumph also kept the club's perfect home stretch intact, as the team now holds a 8-0 record in on their home floor in The Complex. Rollins saw their record fall to 11-7 following the defeat.
