Jan Thissen and junior women's tennis standout
Charleigh Fay were named Gulf South Conference Freshman and Player of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Wednesday.
Fay, a native of Sydney, Australia, helped lead VSU to a 3-0 record last week with wins over Delta State (5-2), No. 26 Columbus State (4-3) and Georgia College (7-0). Fay went 3-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles for the week. She and teammate
Ivana Castillo Hurtado won 7-6 (7-4) at the No. 2 spot in doubles against Columbus State as it clinched the all-important doubles point which proved to be the difference in the match for the upset win by the No. 35 Blazers.
For the spring, Fay is 7-2 in singles and 5-2 in doubles, while she is 10-3 in singles this school year and 7-5 in doubles.
Thissen, a native of Germany, helped lead VSU to a 2-1 record this past week with a 5-2 win over Delta State, a 4-0 loss to No. 42 Columbus State and a 6-1 win over Georgia College. Thissen won in three sets in singles over Delta State, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, while he was leading Samer Al Tori of Columbus State when the match was clinched and he won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles against Georgia College. In doubles, Thissen was 2-1 for the week at No. 3, losing to Delta State and defeating Columbus State and Georgia College.
For the spring, Thissen is 3-3 in singles and 3-3 in doubles, while he is 5-5 in singles for the school year and 4-6 in doubles.
The Blazer tennis teams head to South Florida to face very tough men's and women's squads from Barry as the Barry men's team is No. 1 nationally, while the women's team is No. 2 nationally. The matches against Barry are set for 10 a.m. Saturday morning in Miami Shores, Fla.
