VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State freshman men's tennis player Pietro Casciola was named Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week, while junior women's tennis player Charleigh Fay was named GSC Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
 
Fay, a native of Sydney, Australia, went 2-0 in singles last week for her Blazer debut at the No. 4 spot in the lineup.  She played in one doubles match with junior Ena Arnautovic, losing 6-3 to Middle Georgia.  In singles, however, she was the lone Blazer to win both of her matches in a 5-2 win over Middle Georgia and a 5-2 loss to No. 2 Nova Southeastern.  Fay downed MGA's Agustina Olivero 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) and Nova Southeastern's Amina Sagadiyeva, 6-3, 6-2.  
 
Casciola, a native of Italy, clinched the No. 2-ranked Blazers' win over Middle Georgia last week extending the winning streak to 43-straight matches for VSU.  He won 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 over Michal Glocman at the No. 6 spot for a 4-1 score as VSU won 5-2 for the match.  Casciola lost at the top spot in doubles with teammate Philipp Bosse, 6-4. 
 
The tennis teams return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as they host nationally ranked Embry-Riddle at the VSU Tennis Complex.
