AMERICUS, Ga. – Valdosta State junior
Taylor Youmans scored her second goal of the season as the Blazer women's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory Sunday evening at Georgia Southwestern.
The Blazers (1-1-2) improved to 4-0 all-time against GSW and have blanked the Hurricanes in each of the four meetings. Youmans scored 23 minutes into the contest marking the first shot by the Blazers in the match. Sophomore
Anna Dandeneau had the assist and the first assist of the season for VSU. Youmans finished with three shots and two on target with the game winner to lead the team.
Following the Youmans goal, sophomore
Jenni McIntosh had a good look at the 36:22 mark, but GSW (2-2) goalkeeper Alana Beddow was there for the save. Late in the half, senior
Victoria Bahr also had a strong attempt but Beddow was there, once again. VSU held a 5-2 lead in shots and a 4-1 advantage in shots on target for the half as Blazer senior goalkeeper
Claire Timberlake had one save in the opening stanza, while Beddow had three saves for the Hurricanes.
Just 50 seconds into the second half, GSW's Cassidy Brunner had a good look, but Timberlake was there for the stop. Things got tense for the Blazers in the 71
st minute as the team was issued a yellow card and on the ensuing free kick, Timberlake came up with the save of Maci Dunlap's shot preserving the lead. Later, Blazer freshman
Rhyia Mitchell hit the post on a shot and with just under ten minutes to play GSW's Jordin Gundin also hit the post.
Brunner had a great look at the 86:45 mark, but the Blazers came up with a team save preserving the lead. VSU finished the match with ten shots and four on target, while GSW had eight shots and four on frame. Timberlake tallied her first shutout of the season and notched three saves, while there was the one team save. Beddow had three saves for the Hurricanes. McIntosh had three shots and one on goal for the Blazers, while Brunner had two shots and both on target for GSW.
VSU returns home to host No. 8 Embry-Riddle on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the VSU Soccer Complex and then will open Gulf South Conference play on Saturday at 3 p.m. also at the VSU Soccer Complex versus Montevallo who is among other receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25.
