ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The top-ranked and top-seeded Valdosta State men's tennis team made quick work of No. 16-seed St. Thomas Aquinas (N.Y.) Tuesday morning in the Round of 16 of the 2025 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship.
The Blazers improved to 23-0 on the year and ran its winning streak to 39-straight matches dating back to last season when VSU finished the season with 16-straight wins en route to its third national title. STAC finished 17-7 in its best season in program history, reaching the final site for the first time.
In doubles, No. 3 duo of junior
Jan Skerbatis and senior
Boruch Skierkier won 6-1 over Ondrej Sramek and Erik Victor Tauson, while top tandem of No. 5-ranked seniors
Takeshi Taco and
Xaveam Van Wijk won 6-2 over Seth Newman and Henry Ronnberg to clinch the team point. Blazer No. 2 tandem of No. 8-ranked senior
Edgar Destouet and graduate student
Arthur Bord were tied 4-4 when the team point was clinched.
No. 2-ranked Taco bageled Newman at the top spot, 6-0, 6-0, for a 2-0 lead, while Skerbatis won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 over Sramek for a 3-0 lead and Destouet, ranked No. 20 nationally, won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 over Tauson to clinch the match. Destouet trailed in the second set, but responded nicely winning the final four games of the set after trailing 3-2.
VSU now will face No. 8-seed University of Indianapolis at 3 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon in the national quarterfinals.
