MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The top-seeded and No. 2-ranked Valdosta State men's tennis team made quick work of No. 8-seed Christian Brothers in the Quarterfinal Round of the 2025 Gulf South Conference Championship Thursday afternoon at Lagoon Park.
The Blazers, who are seeking their GSC-best 17
th league title and are the defending league champions, got things off on the right foot on a hot day in Alabama. At the top spot in doubles, No. 10 duo of seniors
Takeshi Taco and
Xaveam Van Wijk won 6-2 over Ignacio Mora and Juan Ycaza. No. 8-ranked duo of senior
Edgar Destouet and graduate student
Arthur Bord won 6-4 over Pedro Gomez and Benjamin Hanriot to earn the doubles point.
In singles, senior
Boruch Skierkier, ranked No. 5 nationally, didn't drop a game as he won 6-0, 6-0 Mora at No. 2 singles. Taco, ranked No. 2 nationally, won 6-1, 6-1 at the top spot over Ycaza and Destouet, ranked No. 21 nationally, won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles over Hanriot to clinch the match.
The Blazers improved to 18-0 on the year, while Christian Brothers ended its season at 9-9. VSU now will await the winner of the No. 4/5 matchup between Mississippi College and Auburn Montgomery. The Blazers will face the winner on Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET in Montgomery, Ala., at Lagoon Park in the league semifinals. The 2025 GSC Championship match is set for Saturday, Apr. 26 at a time to be determined also at Lagoon Park. VSU improved to 77-20 all-time in the GSC postseason tournament. VSU now has won its 34
th-straight match dating back to the final 16 victories last season en route to the program's third national title and 18 this year.
