VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State junior women's soccer midfielder
Kaitlyn Scherer was named Gulf South Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.  This is Scherer's first weekly honor of her career and the first of the season for VSU.

Scherer, a native of Green Cove Springs, Fla., also had a standout week for the Blazers, helping lead the team to a 2-0 record with a 3-1 win over Eckerd and a 4-2 win at Christian Brothers.  Scherer played all 180 minutes, finishing with four shots, three on frame, three goals and one game winner in the win at CBU.  Scherer scored the third goal of the first half in a 3-1 win over Eckerd and then broke a 2-2 tie in the 76th minute with her second goal of the match at CBU, coming just 2:54 after CBU had tied the match.  It gave Scherer her first multi-goal match of her career.  She now has scored goals in three consecutive matches.

For the season, Scherer is second on the team in scoring with ten points as her four goals is tied for the team-lead, while she has two assists.  Scherer has 18 shots (.222) with 12 on goal (.667) while registering a team-high two game winners.

The Blazer women's soccer team hosts Delta State on Friday at 7 p.m., at the VSU Soccer Complex and then hosts Mississippi College on Sunday at 1 p.m., for Senior Day.  Scherer also was named Steel's Jewelry Blazer Athlete of the Week.
