Blazer Tennis Teams Sink the Buccaneers

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Valdosta State men's and women's tennis teams blanked Christian Brothers Saturday morning as bot teams won 7-0 in Pensacola, Fla. 
 
The No. 3-ranked Blazer men's team improved to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in Gulf South Conference play as it got things started winning the doubles point, but the Buccaneers won the first match at No. 3 with Benjamin Hannot and Pedro Gomez downing junior Takeshi Taco and freshman Jerome Iaconi, 6-2.  From there, Blazer top duo of No. 35-ranked seniors Luca Mack and Christian Wedel dispatched Jojo Sandoz and Miguel Perez Habib, 6-1.  No. 47-ranked duo of junior Boruch Skierkier and sophomore Jan Skerbatis won 6-4 over Juan Ycaza and Ignacio Mora, 6-4 to clinch the point. 
 
The Blazers won all six singles matches in straight-sets as Mack, ranked 24th nationally won 6-1, 6-0 at the top spot over Ycaza, while Taco, ranked No. 5 nationally won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 over Mora and No. 21-ranked Skierkier won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3 singles over Hannot.  Iaconi win 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 over Perez Habib, while Skerbatis won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 and junior Zaveam Van Wijk won 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6.
 
On the women's side, the No. 35-ranked Blazers won all three matches in singles by walk overs for an early 1-0 lead and CBU did not field a doubles lineup.   In singles, freshman Natalie Rainke won by retirement over Sofia Zemtsova after a 6-3 win in the first set, while freshman Denisa Hanakova won 6-2, 7-5 over Viktoriia Grigoreva at No. 2 and freshman Aneta Poborilova won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 over Chelsea Dzenga.  Sophomore Evelyn Altmaier won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 over Raheen Taranum.  CBU also didn't field players at both the Nos. 5 and 6 positions. 
 
The VSU women's team improved to 6-7 overall and 5-1 in GSC play.   Both the men's and women's teams will turn their attention to a pair of ranked teams on Sunday versus Mississippi College at 11 a.m. ET.  The MC men's team is 17th nationally while the women's team is 27th
