MONTEVALLO, Ala. – After not playing since Feb. 29, the No. 8 Valdosta State men's tennis team posted a 7-0 victory at Montevallo Wednesday afternoon in Gulf South Conference play. The Blazers improved to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in league play, while Montevallo fell to 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the GSC.
VSU quickly took momentum of the match in doubles as No. 31 duo of junior
Boruch Skierkier and sophomore
Jan Skerbatis downed Gabriel Varlano and R. Elfving Navarro, 6-2 at No. 3, while No. 1 tandem of seniors

Christian Wedel dispatched Leonidas Lazarides and Sam Parsons, 6-2 to claim the point. Junior

Xaveam Van Wijk won at No. 2, 6-4 for the sweep.
Despite winning 7-0, four of the six singles matches went the distance as Skierkier, ranked No. 11 nationally, posted a quick 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3, for a 2-0 lead. Taco, ranked No. 6, needed three sets over Phillippe Zehender, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 for a 3-0 lead and the Blazers clinched the match at the top spot as

th, battled back from first set tiebreaker loss (3-7) to win 6-0, 6-0. From there, Wedel won the first set 6-3 over Noil Vittorio at No. 4, but lost the second set in a tiebreaker (3-7) and won 10-7 in the third on the super tiebreaker for a 5-0 lead. Freshman
Jerome Iaconi won in straight-sets over Ryola Nakajima, 6-2, 6-1, for a 6-0 lead and Skerbatis won 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 6 over Samuel Maia, for the 7-0 victory.
The Blazers return home to prepare for No. 16 Embry-Riddle to visit on Mar. 23 at 2 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.
