VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 2 Valdosta State men's tennis team returns to the court Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET at Montevallo in Gulf South Conference play. VSU has not played since a 7-0 thrashing at home to then-No. 5 Columbus State on Feb. 29.
The Blazers (6-2, 1-0 GSC) had a pair of matches postponed following the CSU match against then-No. 10 Lander (Mar. 5) and then-No. 14 Lee (Mar. 9). Both matches will be rescheduled, but no new dates have been announced. Montevallo enters with a 4-4 record overall and a 2-1 mark in GSC play, but has dropped its last three matches, including a 6-1 loss to West Florida last Saturday.
VSU moved to second nationally in the newest ITA Top 25 as University of Indianapolis leads the top 25. Saint Leo is third, followed by Mississippi College and Barry rounds out the top five. Flagler is sixth, followed by Columbus State, Wayne State (Mich.), UT Tyler is ninth and West Florida is tenth.
Individually, junior Takeshi Taco is seventh nationally at 13-4 on the year, while junior Boruch Skierkier is 14th at 12-1 this season. Senior Luca Mack is 27th and 6-2 this spring. In doubles, Skierkier and sophomore Jan Skerbatis are 21st nationally and 4-0 this year.
Montevallo is led by Ryota Nakajima who is 4-3 in singles, while Simon Luigs is 3-4 this year. Both are 2-1 in league play. For doubles, Phillippe Zehender and Leonidas Lazarides are 4-2 on the year and 1-1 in league play at the No. 2 position.
The Blazers are 5-0 since Mar. 9, 2018, against Montevallo in men's tennis. VSU has won the last three matches each by the score of 7-0.
VSU returns home following the match to prepare for No. 33 Embry-Riddle on Mar. 23 at 2 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.
