VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 3-ranked Valdosta State men's tennis team ran its winning streak to six with a 7-0 victory over Montevallo Friday at the VSU Tennis Complex.
The Blazers (6-0, 2-0 GSC) opened the match with the early 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches in quick fashion. Juniors
Rodrigo Carvalho and
Luca Mack won 6-2 at No. 1 over Philippe Zehender and Fabricio Sosa, while sophomore
Lamar Bartley and senior
Christian Felline won at No. 2, 6-3, over Dylan Kamel and Paul Sobich and juniors
Pedro Cordeiro and
Christian Wedel turned back Vikor Ek Johansson and Nick Hartmann, 6-2.
Cordeiro put VSU up 2-0 with a commanding 6-2, 6-0, win at No. 6 singles over Kamel, while Carvalho put the Blazers up 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Julius Ziebert at No. 2. Valdosta State clinched the match at No. 4 as Wedel won 6-2, 6-3 over Johansson. In conference play, all matches are played out as Felline won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5, while Mack, who is ranked No. 1 nationally and the reigning GSC Player of the Week, won 6-4, 6-2 at the top spot in the lineup over Zehender. Mack improved to 14-1 this year in singles play. Bartley used a pair of tiebreakers to win at No. 3, downing Sobich 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (8-6).
The Blazers head to Pensacola, Fla., for a Sunday match with Delta State. VSU then will return home to host top-ranked Saint Leo Mar. 24 at 3 p.m.
