Wooldridge’s Two Goals Lift Blazers Past Badgers, 2-0

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Behind two goals from junior Molly Wooldridge, the Valdosta State women's soccer team blanked visiting Spring Hill College Friday evening at the VSU Soccer Complex, 2-0.  It marked the fourth shutout of the season for the Blazers.

VSU improved to 8-4-3 overall and 6-4-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while Spring Hill fell to 5-9-1 overall and 2-7-1 in league play.  The win enhanced the Blazers chances for earning a berth in the GSC postseason tournament and potentially a home game in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.  The Blazers now stand alone in fourth place in the standings with 19 points, two points ahead of Alabama Huntsville.

The Blazers have two regular season games remaining, Sunday for Senior Day versus No. 21 West Florida at 1 p.m.  Prior to the game at approximately 12:45, VSU will honor six seniors playing in their final regular season home match.

VSU rattled off four shots in the first nine minutes and had a great look as junior Ana Moleka stayed onside and got behind the Badger defense, but the shot was just wide.

Wooldridge had a great cut to the goal and shot, but SHC goalkeeper Carlotta Stark was up to the task for the save.  Later in the half, sophomore Katherine Kimmel had a great look from outside the box, but the ball sailed just high over the net at the 28:43 mark.

Wooldridge received a nifty pass from Moleka and moved back across the face of the goal for a great look and found the back of the net at the 34:16 mark.  It was Wooldridge's sixth goal of the season and Moleka's fourth assist for a 1-0 lead.

The game remained 1-0 at halftime in favor of the Blazers as they out-shot Spring Hill 11-1 for the half and 4-0 in shots on goal.  Wooldridge had five shots, three on target and the one goal in the half.  Moleka had two shots and the assist.

VSU dominated the attack in the early part of the second half as Wooldridge had a good look and save from Stark.  Junior Ansley Decenzo had a great look at an open net, but the ball dribbled just wide at the 60th minute.  Later, off a corner kick, junior Victoria Bahr chipped paint off the crossbar in the 69th minute, in what would have been a great goal off the set piece.

SHC had its first shot on goal off a turnover and break as Cameryn Morris lined one to sophomore Claire Timberlake, who was there for the save in the 74th minute.  It was just the second shot of the match for the Badgers.

Wooldridge hit pay dirt once again with a great shot and score and assist from Decenzo at the 87:53 mark for the insurance goal and a 2-0 lead.  It was Wooldridge's second multi-goal game of the season (at Georgia College, 9/923) and her fourth of her career.  It also was her 20th and 21st career goals for third all-time in program history.

For the match, VSU improved to 7-0-2 all-time against Spring Hill College as the Blazers have not allowed a goal to the Badgers since a 1-1 tie on Sept. 25, 2016, in the third meeting between the two teams.  VSU finished with 22 shots and ten on target, while SHC had three shots and two on frame.  The Blazers had ten corner kicks in the contest to one for the Badgers.

Wooldridge finished with seven shots, five on frame and two goals, while Moleka had three shots, one on target and one assist and Decenzo added two shots and one on frame with one assist.  Timberlake had two saves in the second half, while Stark finished with eight saves for the Badgers.
