Blazer Tennis Teams Head to Montevallo for Friday Matches

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's and women's tennis teams continue on the road on Friday at Montevallo for a 3 p.m. ET start. 
 
The Blazer men's team is No. 6 nationally and is coming off three wins this past weekend in Pensacola, Fla., versus Christian Brothers, Mississippi College and then-No. 29 West Alabama.  VSU is 10-4 on the year and 6-1 in Gulf South Conference play.  Montevallo enters with a 6-8 mark overall and a 3-2 record in league play.  
 
Last weekend, VSU dropped just one singles match the entire weekend and just one doubles match.  Sophomore Luca Mack, ranked No. 8 nationally this week, went 3-0 in singles last weekend and 3-0 in doubles.  Mack and sophomore Rodrigo Carvalho are the top-ranked doubles team in the country.  Mack is 9-5 at the top spot in the singles lineup this spring and 5-2 in GSC play, while Carvalho is 10-3 this spring and 6-1 in GSC play.  Sophomore Christian Wedel is 12-1 this spring and 7-0 in league play as he has won ten-straight matches this spring. 
 
Mack/Carvalho are 7-4 this spring in doubles and 4-1 in league play as they have won five-straight matches.  Wedel and sophomore Cameron Henricy Trigolos are 5-1 in doubles at the No. 3 spot and 4-1 in GSC play as they have won four-straight matches.
 
Montevallo enters with a 6-8 record overall and a 3-2 mark in the GSC.  The Falcons have won three-straight matches, including a 4-3 decision over No. 20 Lee on Apr. 3.  Prior to the three-match winning streak, UM had lost eight-straight.  Individually, Jules Dugue leads the team with a 7-4 record in singles and a 3-2 mark in GSC play, while the Falcons have used numerous teams in doubles this season. 
 
On the women's side, the No. 54 Blazers went 3-1 last weekend and are 7-9 overall and 6-2 in GSC play thus far.  Montevallo is 7-6 overall and 4-2 in GSC play as it has won four-straight matches heading into Friday's contest.  
 
For VSU, freshman Adriana Barrio is 11-5 on the year and 7-1 in GSC play this spring, while freshman Magda Tuells Bonet is 8-7 overall and 6-2 in GSC play, while sophomore Rachelle Starreveld is 6-6 and 4-3 in league play this spring.  Tuells Bonet is ranked 70th nationally in singles.  In doubles, freshman Elisa Beau and Tuells Bonet are 5-2 this spring and 3-1 in league play to lead the team.
 
Montevallo is led this season by Eva Dirr at 9-7 overall and 6-3 in league play, while Isabelle Barfoot is 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference play in singles.  For doubles, Dorotea Hanzek and Mireia Turro are 6-7 overall and 2-4 in league play, while Dirr and Cyba Ozzor are 6-5 overall and 4-3 league play.
 
Following the matches on Friday, the Blazers return to action on Wed., Apr. 13 at 3 p.m. at Columbus State, while the women's team then will host Flagler on Apr. 15 at 2 p.m.  Both the men's and women's teams will conclude the regular season on Apr. 20 at 3 p.m. versus Auburn Montgomery at the VSU Tennis Courts.
