COLUMBUS, Ga. – In another outstanding edition of the rivalry between Valdosta State and Columbus State in men's tennis, top-ranked Columbus State edged the No. 6 Blazers 4-3 Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, VSU fell to 11-5 on the year, while CSU improved to 14-1.
The Cougars won at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to claim the doubles point, but VSU's top-ranked duo of sophomore
Luca Mack and
Rodrigo Carvalho downed No. 4-ranked tandem of Alvaro Regalado and Javier Cueto Ramos, 7-6 (7-5).
Heading into singles, CSU took a pivotal 2-0 lead as Felix Steen downed junior
Christian Felline 6-3, 6-4, but the Blazers battled back as Mack, ranked No. 8 nationally, upset top-ranked Regalado, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), handing him his first singles loss of the spring. Cavalho followed suit, ranked No. 60, as he upset No. 37 Cueto Ramos, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, for a 2-2 team score.
From there, CSU's Christian Garay, ranked No. 75, defeated sophomore
Christian Wedel in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, as it was Wedel's first loss in his last 11 singles matches. CSU clinched the match at No. 6 singles as Pietro Martinetti downed sophomore
Cameron Henricy Trigolos, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, but Blazer freshman
Lamar Bartley upset No. 25 Tommaso Schold, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 at No. 3 to finish the match.
The Blazers return to action next Wednesday at 3 p.m. at home to conclude the regular season versus Auburn Montgomery at the VSU Tennis Courts.
