PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 6 Valdosta State men's tennis team downed No. 35 Delta State, 4-3, while the women's team blanked the Lady Statemen 7-0 in Pensacola. Both teams improved to 3-0 in Gulf South Conference play.
On the men's side, the Blazers (6-3) dropped the doubles point, but saw a win from juniors
Christian Wedel and
Cameron Henricy Trigolos, 6-1. The Blazers evened the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 3 singles as sophomore
Rodrigo Carvalho won 7-6, 7-6 (9-7) at No. 3 over Come Bracaval. Carvalho entered at No. 63 nationally, while Bracaval was 59
th nationally. DSU's Hugo Stroppiana won 7-6 (12-10), 6-2 over No. 6
Luca Mack at the top spot for a 2-1 VSU lead.
From there, Trigolos won at No. 6 in straight-set, 6-4, 6-3, for a 3-1 lead and freshman
Lamar Bartley dropped the first set, 6-0, but rallied for a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Emile Le Terrier to clinch the match. DSU's Emilano Elizarraraz won at No. 5, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7) and 10-5 in a super tie breaker for the final score of 4-3.
On the women's side, the Blazers (4-6) swept the doubles point with a pair of 7-5 victories and a 6-1 win for the early lead. VSU didn't take its foot off the pedal as four of the six matches were straight-set victories, while freshman
Elisa Beau clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3. Freshman
Anastasiia Vorobiova won at No. 2 in three sets, (6-3, 3-6, 10-8), while freshman
Andrea Barrio won 6-4, 3-6, 10-8.
The VSU tennis teams play at West Florida on Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. ET.
