Blazer Baseball Sinks Buccaneers Saturday Afternoon Behind Season-High 18 Hits

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Valdosta State baseball team responded nicely, following the loss last night at Nova Southeastern, with an 11-3 victory at Barry on Saturday afternoon.  The Blazers improved to 3-2 on the year as they tallied a season-high 18 hits in the game.  Barry fell to 2-5 on the season.

A total of nine different Blazers had hits in the game, while senior EJ Doskow went 3 for 4 with two runs scored and four RBI.  Senior Luke Ard finished 3 for 5 with a run scored and one RBI.  Sophomore Preston Joye also tallied three hits in the game, going 3 for 5 with a run scored and one RBI.

Blazer sophomore hurler JJ Finn went six innings, allowing eight hits, one earned run, walked none and fanned two as he improved to 2-0 on the year.  Junior Zach Henderson and graduate student Adrian Garrastazu pitched the final three innings.  Barry tallied 11 hits and three runs in the game.

Doskow began the scoring in the first inning with an RBI double to left field and a ground out RBI plated the third run of the frame.  Ard and graduate student Mike Christopoulos safely converted a double steal as Christopoulos stole home for a 4-0 lead.  The Blazers added a run in the top of the second on a double from senior Jakob Sessa.

The Buccaneers scored one run in the bottom of the second, but the Blazers added three runs in the fifth to widen the gap.  Junior Ryan Romano began the inning with a single up the middle.  Sessa drew a free pass and Doskow came up with his second two RBI double of the game – this time down the left field line for a 7-1 score.  Joye later hit an infield single for a score, plating Doskow for an 8-1 lead. VSU added three more runs in the seventh for an 11-1 lead and Barry's David Vazquez hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning for an 11-3 score.

The Blazers finish the weekend road slate at Lynn on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 12 p.m., in Boca Raton, Fla. Valdosta State will then open the 2022 home slate on Feb. 16 at 5 p.m., at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park against Saint Leo.
