Blazer Volleyball Continues Conference Play Friday Evening with West Georgia at The Complex

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State volleyball team welcomes Gulf South Conference rival West Georgia to The Complex Friday at 6 p.m., for the second match of the conference slate this season.
 
VSU (6-7, 0-1 GSC) opened conference play Tuesday as it battled No. 16 West Florida (12-1, 1-0 GSC).  The Blazers gave a great effort, falling to the Argos 3-1.  VSU was led by nine kills from graduate student Deona Mims, while junior Jessie Mooney and freshman Kylie Stroehlein each had eight kills.  Senior Tammy Reyes-Perez finished with a double-double with 33 assists and 11 digs, while Mooney also had 11 digs and Stroehlein recorded a team-high 14 digs.  VSU hit .215 for the match with 44 kills in 135 swings.
 
For the season, the Blazers are second in the GSC in total attacks (1,764), and third in total blocks with 91. VSU is third in the GSC for digs (776) for 20th nationally and total assists (509) for 27thnationally. The Blazers are fourth in the GSC in total kills with 545 for 33rd nationally.  
 
Individually, Reyes-Perez is first in the GSC in total assists with 434 for tenth nationally, and is fourth in the GSC in assists per set at an 8.86 clip.  Stroehlein sits 23rd nationally and second in the league in total attacks (437), while freshman Kennedy Deluca is second in the league and 46thnationally in total blocks with 42.  Redshirt freshman Lyara Rosario sits 18th nationally and first in the GSC in total digs with 220. 
 
West Georgia (6-4, 0-1 GSC) dropped its GSC opener at the hands of Auburn Montgomery on Tuesday, 3-1.  In the match, Tierra White led UWG with 17 kills and hit North of .400 for the match.  AUM and UWG split the first two sets, while the Warhawks won the third set 25-22 carrying the momentum into the fourth where they hit a match-high .378 with 16 kills and just two errors for the frame and a 25-16 victory to clinch the match.
 
UWG leads the GSC in digs per set at a 17.12 clip for 47th nationally, while the team is third in the GSC in opponent hitting percentage at just a .135 clip for 46th nationally.  UWG is second in the league in team attacks per set at a 37.73 clip for 45th nationally, while it is fourth in total in the GSC in total digs (702) for 39th nationally.  UWG is fourth in the GSC in total team attacks (1,547) for 39th nationally.  Individually, Sydney Blackmon is second in the GSC in digs per set (4.8) and is second in the conference in total digs (197) for 40th nationally.  White is fourth in the GSC in total kills (133) for 58th nationally. 
 
The Wolves began the season winning their first four matches at the Erskine Tournament, but have gone 2-4 since.   VSU has won 13 of the last 20 matches dating back to 2010, but the Wolves have won the last three.  VSU is 9-1 at home during the streak against UWG, but lost the last time at The Complex in a 3-0 setback on Sept. 28, 2019.  
 
Following Friday's match, the Blazers have a week off until they head on the road for the first conference road trip of the season, Oct. 1 and Oct. 2 at Christian Brothers and Union, respectively.
