HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The No. 25 Valdosta State Blazers fell against Alabama Huntsville in its regular season finale 15-12.
Â
The Blazers (24-14, 22-13 Gulf South Conference) were led by
Jowenrick Daantji who recorded three hits off five at-bats while driving in two runners. Four separate Blazers were able to get a pair of RBI, along with four Blazers recording more than one hit. The Blazers were able to get out to an early lead, but UAH matched it which was a common occurrence for the game. Both teams matched its runs in the second, but a big six run inning gave the Blazers a 10-4 lead early on. UAH was able to chip away at the lead where it eventually took it at 11-10 but VSU answered to go up by one. However, UAH answered with a pair of runs followed by another pair in the eighth to secure the win, 15-12. In total, VSU recorded 13 hits off 36 at-bats as UAH was able to record 23, two more than its doubleheader total yesterday, off 47 at-bats. VSU saw just six of its runners stranded while UAH left 12 runs stranded on the base pads.
Â
The Blazers secured the fourth seed in the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament which begins May 7. Â
The Blazers were able to get off on the right foot off a groundout from
Jakob Sessa which drove in
Nick Lewis, followed by a passed ball which Daantji was able to convert off of. Although the Blazers had the quick 2-0 advantage, UAH was able to come right back in the first and score two of its own to tie things up. The game didn't slow down from first pitch, as a triple from
Jisjar Clotida drove in
Jordan Holt who found the base pads off a single, followed by a
Jacob Harper single to put VSU up a pair. Just like the last inning though, UAH matched VSU's play and tied it back up at four.
Â
The Blazers erupted in the third, getting things started with a
Logan Stephens two-run homerun. A fielders choice drove Holt in to make it 7-4, followed by a Harper blast to left field for a RBI double. Still with one out, the Blazers looked to keep on tacking it on to create a strong lead. A few Blazers found the basepads which gave Daantji the opportunity to hit a single deep into the right field gap, driving in two runners. UAH was able to end the third, but VSU took advantage as it scored six runs off six hits.
Â
It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth where either team could get something going, this time it was UAH as it crossed three runners across home plate to cut the Blazers lead to just three. After the Blazers second-straight hitless inning, UAH kept on rolling to take the lead with four runs in the fifth inning. VSU was able to answer back though where it retook the lead at 12-11 with help from Sessa and Holt.
Â
The Blazers looked to hang on to its lead but once again, UAH was able to answer with a pair of runs to take the lead once again. UAH added two insurance runs in the eighth to increase the lead to three. The Blazers bats fell flat in the last three innings as it was only able to record one hit in that time, not enough to overcome its deficit and dropping the closeout game.
