VALDOSTA, Ga. – In another thrilling edition of the Valdosta State versus West Florida men's tennis battle, the No. 7 Blazers won five of six singles matches to defeat the No. 4 Argos, 5-2 Friday afternoon and remain perfect in the Gulf South Conference at 6-0 and 9-1 overall.
The Argos (11-3, 5-1 GSC) won the doubles points with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. VSU No. 1 tandem of seniors
Yohan Nguyen and
Florian Simbozel made quick work of Salvador Bandeira and Gabriel Nery, 6-1. Serdar Bojadjiev and Lluis Miralles Miro defeated freshman duo of
Luca Mack and
Edward Etty at No. 2 doubles to win the point, 7-5. At No. 3, Nicolas Lecoutre and William Shkrob defeated freshmen
Cameron Henricy Trigolos and
Christian Wedel, 6-2.
VSU sophomore
Christian Felline won in straight-sets at No. 5 over Juan Motta, 6-2, 6-1, to even the match at 1-1. Wedel won at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 for a 2-1 VSU lead as the momentum began to swing to the Blazers. Nguyen ended his regular season home singles career with a thrilling 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 victory at No. 1 over Bojadjiev for a 3-1 lead.
Trigolos then won 6-3 and held off a rally from Nery for a 7-6 (7-3) victory in the second set to clinch the team victory. Simbozel then won in three sets over Lecoutre at No. 2, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 for a 5-1 score. Juan Cabrera won in a hard-fought three set match with Mack at No. 4, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
VSU now has defeated UWF three of the last four meetings, including twice in 2019 for both the regular season title and the conference tournament title. UWF won 4-2 that season in the NCAA South Regional second round in Valdosta.
The Blazers now have three conference matches left during the regular season with matches against Mississippi College and West Alabama in Pensacola, Fla., Apr. 10-11, and a makeup match with Christian Brothers, Apr. 16, in Montgomery, Ala.
