Women’s Soccer Heads to Auburn Montgomery for GSC Clash Friday Evening

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State women's soccer team returns to the road Friday evening as it travels to Auburn Montgomery for a matchup with the Warhawks at 6 p.m. ET.

The Blazers are 1-1-1 on the year and 1-0-1 in Gulf South Conference play.  VSU has not played since a 2-2 draw with Lee on Feb. 25.  VSU led 1-0 with a penalty kick goal in the sixth minute from senior Paige Taylor.  It was her second converted PK this season and fourth of her career for a new school record.  Lee leveled the match at one just seven minutes later and it remained 1-1 at halftime.  Senior Kira Malpica scored her first goal of the season in the second half and Lee evened the match, once again, in the 77th minute.
 
VSU freshman goalkeeper Landon Carter made her collegiate debut and stopped 14 balls in 110 minutes for the tie.  VSU sophomore Rachael Howard had an assist as she has recorded a point in each of the three matches this season.  She had two shots on frame in the match against Lee.  The Blazers then had the match with Montevallo postponed on Feb. 28 due to COVID-19 protocols. A makeup date for the Montevallo match has not been set.
 
AUM enters with a 1-2 mark overall and 1-2 in GSC play.  The Warhawks won their first game of the season with a 1-0 victory at Shorter last time out on Feb. 27.  Prior to that, AUM dropped contests with Montevallo (4-0) and Lee (3-1). 
 
The Warhawks are led this season by Milian Mollison who has one goal, one assist and three points for the season.  She leads the team with five shots and two on frame.  Julia Simoes has scored one goal and has four shots and one on frame and one game winner. 
 
As a team, AUM has two goals and three assists for six points, while firing 25 shots with eight on frame.  The opposition has scored seven goals with four assists for 18 points.  The opponents have 44 shots with 17 on goal.  Between the posts, Rebecca Jameison has logged all 270 minutes, allowing seven goals (2.33 GAA) with nine saves and one shutout.
 
VSU owns a 3-1 record all-time against AUM and has outscored the Warhawks 18-4 for the series.  The Blazers are 1-0 in Montgomery with a 6-3 victory there on Sept. 14, 2018.  VSU has scored six goals in each of the three victories against the Warhawks.  AUM's lone win came in the first meeting on Sept. 4, 2016, in Valdosta with a 1-0 score.
 
The Blazers are led this season by Howard who has two goals and two assists for six points.  She has seven shots to lead the team with six on frame.   Taylor is second in scoring with four points on the two PK's, while she has three shots all on frame.  Malpica, along with juniors Kyleigh Reedy and Lyana Steele each have one goal on the year.   Junior Lauren Hicks and sophomore Mallory Johnson each have one assist for the season.

In goal, sophomore Samantha Blanford got the start in the first two matches, going 1-1 in 183:59 minutes, allowing five goals (2.45 GAA) with 16 saves.  Carter had the one start against Lee, allowing two goals (1.64 GAA) with 14 saves in 110 minutes.
 
As a team, the Blazers have scored seven goals with four assists and 18 points, while recording 30 shots and 17 on frame.  Conversely, the opposition also has scored seven goals with five assists for 19 points.  VSU has allowed 57 shots with 39 on frame.  The Blazers are 2-2 in PK's, while the opposition is 0-1. 
 
Following the match, VSU returns home to host Shorter at 3 p.m. on Mar. 12 at the VSU Soccer Complex to complete the spring regular season.  Check back with vstateblazers.com for the latest updates on if the Montevallo match will be made up and when.
