VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State volleyball team is set to face off against Union (Tenn.) in the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship Series Friday at 6 p.m. E.T. at Auburn Montgomery.

The Blazers finished the regular season 1-7 overall and a 1-4 mark in the GSC. VSU's sole win came from a weekend matchup against Lee in a thrilling five set match. VSU was able to secure set one and three before Lee forced a fifth set after its 25-18 set win. All five sets were close as one through three saw final sets of 26-24, 27-25, and 25-23. The Blazers took control in the deciding set, however, and took down the Flames after its 15-9 set win. The Blazers were led by
Caitlin Warnshuis who accounted for 26 of the Blazers 68 kills.

VSU is the No. 6 seed in Group B, while Union is the No. 3 seed in Group A. Union enters with a 5-1 record overall and a 3-1 mark in Group A of the GSC. Union has a definitive edge in sets won this season, with an overall set record of 17-6 with three sweeps. The Bulldogs only loss came from its most recent match as the team was able to force a fifth set after going down two sets to zero early. The comeback fell just short as Mississippi College handed Union its first loss of the season. As a whole, the Bulldogs allow its opposition to score 20 points per set, along with a hitting percentage of .152 with 259 kills. The Bulldogs are hitting at a .242 clip with 286 total kills, good for 12.4 per set.

The Bulldogs are led by Haley Ramsey who has recorded 48 kills this season, good for 2.09 a set. With 24 attack errors, she's hitting at a .169 clip off 142 total attacks. Alyssa Tatsch and Emily Grace Calhoon are close behind, both with 47 kills for 2.04 per set, where Calhoon holds the edge with a .385 hitting percentage with just two attack errors. Jordan Vick is the team's leading setter with 199 assists, good for 8.65 assists per set on top of her 36 kills.

With being the No. 3 seed in Group A, Union has been considered the "home team" for Friday's first round matchup against the Blazers. The winner of Friday's match will face No. 2B Auburn Montgomery on Saturday, Mar. 27. The GSC Spring Championship Match is scheduled for Apr. 1 inside the Finley Center in Hoover, Ala.

The Blazers are led by Warnshuis who has seen the floor is all eight matches this season with 89 kills for an average of 3.42 kills a set. Junior
Jessie Mooney is close behind with 85 kills, having started in all 27 sets so far this season. The junior also leads the team with 82 digs on the year along with nine service aces. Senior
Tammy Reyes Perez is the Blazers leading setter with 254 assists in the 27 sets that she has seen for 9.41 per set, as she has tacked on 19 kills and 66 digs. As a team, VSU has knocked down 335 kills for a .165 hitting percentage, good for 12.4 kills per set.

The Blazers fare well against the Bulldogs as VSU has only lost two matches, dating back to the 2012 season. VSU holds a 34-13 set advantage during the last 13 matches, with its longest winning streak at nine matches. However, the Bulldogs got the best of the Blazers the last time the two teams matched up in the 2019 season. The Blazers were able to take the first set, but the Bulldogs rolled on and took the next three sets to win the match 3-1. Mooney is the top returning Blazer from that match where she knocked down nine kills for a .138 hitting percentage. Meghan Delaney returns for the Bulldog where she led the 2019 match with 17 kills off 53 total attacks.
