Blazer Tennis Teams Host Montevallo Tuesday Afternoon

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State men's and women's tennis teams return to the courts Tuesday at 2 p.m. versus Gulf South Conference foe Montevallo at the VSU Tennis Complex.
 
The Blazer men's tennis team is 7-0 on the year and 4-0 in Gulf South Conference play while it is tied for seventh nationally in the latest ITA Division II Tennis Rankings.  VSU had its last match postponed at Georgia College, which was originally scheduled for Mar. 17.  A makeup date hasn't been set yet.  Prior to that, VSU played three matches in three days from Mar. 11-13 as it defeated No. 21 Washburn (4-0) and then won road matches at Shorter (6-1) and at Lee (5-2). 
 
VSU swept the GSC Player of the Week honors last week as freshman Cameron Henricy Trigolos earned Freshman of the Week accolades, while junior Florian Simbozel was tabbed Player of the Week.  Trigolos and Simbozel join freshman Luca Mack and senior Yohan Nguyen as Blazers who have earned weekly honors this season.  In addition, freshman Christian Wedel was named ITA Division II Player of the Week a week ago, marking the first time this season the Blazers have had an ITA Player of the Week.
 
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, fans will need to socially distance at home matches this season and face coverings will be required at all times for all guests over the age of two (2).
 
Following the three matches in three days, the Blazers got some much-needed rest leading up to the match Tuesday.  In doubles this season, the tandem of Nguyen and Simbozel are 5-1 at the top spot and 2-1 in GSC play to lead the team.  Mack and fellow freshman Edward Etty are 3-3 at the No. 2 spots, while Trigolos and Wedel are 2-2 at the No. 3 spot and 3-2 overall. 
 
Nguyen is 5-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-0 in GSC play, while Simbozel is 5-0 overall and 4-0 at No. 2 singles.  Mack is 4-1 overall in singles and 3-1 at No. 4, while Trigolos is 4-2 overall and 3-2 at No. 5.  Wedel has been outstanding since coming to VSU this year from Alabama Huntsville.  He is 7-0 in singles and 5-0 at No. 3, while going 1-0 at Nos. 1 and 2.  The Blazers are a blistering 30-7 this season in singles and 20-4 in GSC play.  Wedel is a team-best 4-0 in GSC matches.
 
Montevallo enters with a 2-6 record overall and a 1-1 mark in GSC play.  The Falcons dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 1 Columbus State the last time out and lost to No. 25 Southwest Baptist, 5-2.  The Falcons have defeated Tuskegee (7-0) and Christian Brothers (5-2) this season. 
 
The Falcons are 18-28 in singles this season and 7-5 in GSC play.  Gavin Salton leads the way with a 4-0 record at No. 5 and a 2-0 mark in the GSC.  David Tanguy is 3-3 overall in singles and 3-2 at No. 4, while Jules Dugue is 2-4 overall and 2-2 at No. 6.  In doubles, the team is 8-16 and 4-2 in league play, while Milan Ludlage and Phillippe Zehender are 3-3 in doubles and 2-3 at the top spot in the lineup.
 
VSU has won the previous two meetings in the series, winning 5-0 in Montevallo on Mar. 9, 2018, and 5-2 in Valdosta on Mar. 26, 2019. 
 
On the women's side, the Blazers enter with a 3-4 record overall and a 3-1 mark in the GSC.  VSU lost 4-1 to Washburn, but battled back for a pair of key road wins at Shorter (6-1) and at Lee (5-2).  VSU freshman Julia Saving was named GSC Freshman of the Week last week for the Blazers, marking the second-straight week of VSU earning Freshman of the Week as Rachelle Starreveld earned the honor the previous week.  The first week of the season senior Estee' Widdershoven was named GSC Player of the Week. 
 
For the season, Widdershoven is 4-2 at No. 1 singles and 3-1 in GSC play, while sophomore Birte Langenstein is 4-3 and 3-1 in GSC play at a combination of both Nos. 3 and 4 singles.  Junior Hera Bjork Brynjarsdottir is 3-4 overall and 3-1 in GSC Play at Nos. 5 and 6.  As a team, VSU is 16-23 in singles this season and 14-10 in GSC play.
 
In doubles, the Blazers are led by Langenstein and Saving at a 4-3 record and a 2-2 mark in the GSC.  The tandem is 2-2 at No. 2 and 2-1 at No. 3.  Widdershoven and Starreveld are 2-2 at No. 1 this season and 1-1 in league play, while sophomore Eva Rivoal and Widdershoven are 2-1 at the top spot and 2-0 in league play. 
 
Montevallo enters with a 3-6 record overall and a 1-2 mark in league play.  The Falcons also lost to Columbus State (6-1) and Southwest Baptist (4-3).  UM has wins over Tuskegee (7-0), Tennessee Wesleyan (5-2) and West Georgia (6-1) this season. 
 
For the season, Isabelle Barfoot leads the team with 5-1 record overall and a 2-0 mark in league play at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions in singles combined.  Cyba Ozzor is 4-5 overall and 1-2 in league play at multiple spots in the lineup, while Victoria Rauscher is 3-5 overall.  The team is 21-31 in singles and 8-10 in league play.  In doubles, Dorotea Hanzek and Mireia Turro are 4-5 at the top spot and 1-2 in the GSC.  Ozzor and Emily Hafner are 3-3 at No. 2, while Barfoot and Eva Dirr are 3-1 at No. 3 doubles. 
 
Montevallo leads the series 3-0 with a 6-3 victory on Mar. 9, 2018 in Montevallo and a neutral site victory that season (5-1), while winning in Valdosta on Mar. 26, 2019, 5-2.
