Blazer Volleyball Drops Spring Season Finale Versus West Georgia, 3-0

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Blazers came up short against West Georgia, dropping three sets to none which all came down to the wire. Caitlin Warnshuis once again led the Blazers with 18 kills for a .136 hitting percentage where Tammy Reyes Perez led with 44 assists. VSU finished the day with 52 kills and 24 errors and accounted for a pair of service aces.
 
First Set:
The Wolves were able to put the first point on the board, but an attack error followed by a Warnshuis kill gave the Blazers an early lead. The Wolves came right back to take the lead, but the Blazers followed in a set that went back and forth throughout. The Blazers went on a commanding 7-0 run, highlighted by four kills, to widen its lead to five. VSU looked to be in control as it remained in the lead until the Wolves went on a quick 4-0 run to tie things up at 15. Warnshuis broke the tie to give the Blazers a slight edge, but the Wolves had an answer to tie it up. VSU gained an edge as it led mainly through the end of the set, one point away from taking set one at 24-23. The Wolves found the scoreboard to tie things up and 24 but a service error put the Blazers one point away once again. A thrilling first set, the Wolves tied it once again at 25, followed by 26 after a VSU point. The Wolves finally took a step ahead with a 27-26 set point, but Jessie Mooney extended the set with a kill. The Blazers tied it once again at 28 but fell short as UWG took control of the final two points to take the first set 30-28.
 
Second Set:
Warnshuis added another kill to her name to start the second set, looking for some momentum to even the match. The Wolves quickly put two of its points on the board, but Reyes Perez tied it up with a kill. Just like set one, set two went back and forth where there were eight times the set was tied before either team saw 10 points. The Blazers were playing from behind during the middle of the set before it was able to push forward and take a 15-14 lead along with adding another point off a Grace Daugherty kill. Up two, the Blazers saw its lead vanish as UWG took four straight points and didn't look back. The Blazers would cut it close, cutting its deficit down to one at 18-17 with help from Daugherty, but the Wolves came right back with a kill of its own. The Wolves took one of its largest leads of the set at 23-20 but the Blazers turned right back and scored two points to make it 23-22. A kill put the Wolves one point away from taking the set, but Mooney added two crucial kills to tie the set at 24. Pushing the set past 25, the Wolves went ahead 25-24 but Daugherty tied thing up at 25. However, just like set one, the Wolves were able to take control and score the final two points to take the second set 27-25.
 
Third Set:
Warnshuis recorded the first kill in an important set for the Blazers before the Wolves tied it up, but the Blazers gained an edge with two straight kills from Warnshuis. She added another kill after the Wolves cut it to one, but UWG secured four straight points to put itself in the lead. A service error followed by a Kennedy DeLuca kill tied the set up at six, making set three another close one. The Blazers would match the Wolves whenever it tried to gain a substantial lead before the Blazers saw its last lead of the set at 10-9. The Wolves responded though and took the eventual 14-11 lead. The Wolves carried its momentum, getting the better half of the Blazers throughout the third set as it went on a 4-0 run to give it its largest lead of the match at 23-16. Warnshuis ended the run with a kill to try and start a Blazer comeback as VSU was able to get to 19 points, but the UWG lead was too large as the Wolves closed out set three 25-19 to take the match.
 
Inside the Numbers:
Along with Warnshuis, Mooney (13) and Daugherty (12) finished in the double digits for kills. Lyara Rosario Hernandez led the defensive side of the ball with her 22 digs, followed by Mooney who recorded 15. As a team, Valdosta State hit at a .206 percent where the Wolves edged VSU as it finished with a .276 percentage.
