MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 15 Valdosta State men's tennis team made its first road trip of the season and downed Auburn Montgomery 7-0 in the Blazers' Gulf South Conference opener.
VSU improved to 3-0 on the year and 1-0 in league play as doubles began the match with senior tandem of
Yohan Nguyen and junior
Florian Simbozel making quick work of Muhamad Bedwan and Nino Portugal, 6-0, at the top spot. The Warhawks (1-4, 0-2 GSC) won at No. 2 doubles with Joao Guariente and Francisco Jimenez defeating freshmen
Christian Wedel and
Cameron Henricy Trigolos, 7-6 and 7-5 in the tiebreaker. VSU would win the team point, however, as freshmen
Luca Mack and
Edward Etty won at No. 2 over David Rieme and Jose Garcia, 6-2.
Nguyen gave VSU a 2-0 cushion with a win at the top spot in singles over Bedwan 6-4, 6-4, while Mack also won by the same scores at No. 4 for a 3-0 lead. Wedel clinched the match for the Blazers at No. 3 with a 6-7, 6-4, 10-6 victory. At No. 2, Simbozel needed three sets and won two tie breakers for his victory, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6.
After the match was clinched, the teams played out the rest of the field with Trigolos winning in straight-sets at No. 5, along with Etty at No. 6, while Wedel needed three sets for the win at No. 3 over Guariente.
VSU returns home to host Delta State on Sat., Mar. 6, at 1 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Complex.
