VALDOSTA, Ga. – Following the first match of the season on Sunday, Valdosta State senior men's tennis standout Yohan Nguyen was named the Gulf South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
 
Nguyen helped lead the No. 15 Blazers to a 4-1 victory over No. 23 North Georgia as he and junior Florian Simbozel downed Ryan Gaskin and Kevin Candido, 6-4 at the top spot in doubles to help clinch the doubles point. 
 
He then downed Gaskin at the top spot in singles, 6-4, 6-2, giving VSU a 3-1 lead in the match as freshman Luca Mack clinched the match with a three-set victory at No. 4 singles over Zach Waldow, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. 
 
The Blazers continue at home this week as they face No. 9 Flagler at 2 p.m. on Friday and NAIA power No. 7 Keiser on Sunday at 1 p.m.  Both matches will be at the VSU Tennis Courts.
