VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Valdosta State volleyball team continues conference play this week as it heads to Rome, Ga., to face Shorter University on Tuesday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. The Blazers then return home for the final two home matches of the season on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m., at Valdosta High School versus Christian Brothers and then on Sunday, Nov. 7 at 1 p.m., against Union for Senior Day.
This marks the second matchup with Shorter this season as the Hawks won 3-0 in Valdosta on Oct. 9. SU has won the last two meetings in the series and six of eight. SU owns a 9-7 lead in the series since 2012, and a 5-3 mark in Rome during that span. VSU won 3-2 in its last trip to Rome on Sept. 24, 2019.
Shorter enters the week with a 15-11 record overall and an 8-3 mark in the Gulf South Conference. SU snapped a seven-game skid with a 3-1 victory at West Alabama on Saturday. Prior to the skid, Shorter began winning 14 of its first 17 matches. The Hawks sit third in the GSC standings, one game ahead of both Auburn Montgomery and Union and a half game behind Alabama Huntsville (9-2).
SU is leading the conference in service aces with 172 (26
th nationally) and second in service aces per set with 1.77. Shorter also is fifth in the league in blocks per set at a 1.92 clip. Madison Sprosty is 31
st nationally and second in the league in aces per set at a 0.51 clip, while she is seventh nationally in service aces with 49 to lead the league. Lacee Glover is fourth in the GSC in attacks (829), while she is second in the league in attacks per set at a 9.64 clip. Glover is fourth in the league in points per set (3.82) and fifth in kills per set (3.28). She is fourth in the league in aces (34). Carrington Terrell is second in the GSC and 16
th nationally in total blocks (99), while Sprosty is sixth in the league in total digs (380) and Glover is third in total kills (282).
The Blazers are looking to bounce back from their weekend slate where they fell to Montevallo, 3-1 and Alabama Huntsville, 3-0. Valdosta State is currently sitting ninth in GSC standings as they are 11-6 overall and 4-7 in the GSC. VSU also is looking to snap a five-match skid as its last win came in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Mississippi College on Oct. 20 in The Complex.
This season, the Blazers are second in the GSC and 20
th nationally in total attacks with 3,265, while the Blazers are fourth in the GSC in assists (1,092) for 36
th nationally. VSU is third in the GSC and 37
th nationally in team digs with 1,596 and fifth in the GSC for 54
th nationally in team kills (1,154). The Blazers are sixth in the GSC and 79
th nationally in service aces with 148.
Individually, senior
Tammy Reyes-Perez is second in the GSC in assists per set (9.37), while she is tenth nationally (second in GSC) in total assists with 937. Redshirt freshman
Lyara Rosario is 18
th nationally and first in the GSC in total digs with 491. She also leads the GSC in digs per set at a 4.86 clip for 56
th nationally. Freshman
Jojo Smith, is third in the GSC in kills per set, averaging 3.72 on the season and has recorded 227 kills for the year and swinging at a .148 clip.
