Blazers Drop Tough Battle Against Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss – The Valdosta State women's soccer team fell 4-1 on the road to Mississippi College Friday afternoon.  The Blazers dropped to 5-3-1 on the season, and 2-2-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while Mississippi College improved to 7-3 on the year and 5-2 in GSC play.

In the third minute, the Choctaws started the scoring campaign with Beatrice Curry slotting a shot past senior goalkeeper Samantha Blanford for the early lead.  After continuous pressure from the Choctaws and four shots wide of the frame, Blazer freshman Molly Wooldridge scored in the 24th minute to level the match for the Blazers off an assist from sophomore midfielder Mallory Johnson to level the match. Wooldridge recorded her fifth goal this season and finished the game with VSU's only shot and goal.

Wooldridge's goal marked the first goal scored on the Choctaws since Oct. 5, 2014, in the Blazer's first matchup with MC.  Woolridge's goal was just the second against MC in program history and the first on the road, ending a span of 513:47 scoreless minutes.

Blanford came up big late in the first half as she saved the potential go-ahead goal in the 42nd minute on a point-blank shot from MaryElla White.  Blanford finished the match with nine saves and faced 24 shots from the Choctaws.

The Blazer's defense held up strong in the first 20 minutes to start the second half, successfully defending one corner kick from the Choctaws and five shots.  MC found the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute from Makayla Hernandez.  A few minutes later, in the 66th minute, Currie capitalized once again, giving the Choctaws a 3-1 lead.

The Choctaws continued to put pressure on the Blazer's backline, picking up the fourth goal in the 82nd minute from Avery Hederman to bring the final score to 4-1.

The Blazers were outshot by the Choctaws 24-1, with MC having 13 shots on frame. MC was led by the two goals Currie, as she led the team with six shots and two on target.

On Sunday, the Blazers continue their Mississippi road trip, traveling north to Cleveland, Miss., to take on Delta State at 2 p.m. EST.  Fans can access links to live stats and streaming of Sunday's match at vstateblazers.com on the women's soccer schedule page.
