VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State senior
Nick Lewis stole second and stole third, before scoring on a wild pitch for an 8-7 walk-off, come-from-behind victory over Thomas University Tuesday afternoon.
The Blazers, who moved to No. 11 in the
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Top 25 this week following its sweep of Rollins last weekend, trailed the Night Hawks 7-5 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Senior
Alec Aleywine hit his second home run of the game for a 7-6 score and senior
Logan Stephens then laced a triple and senior
Mike Christopoulos singled home Stephens for a 7-7 score.
In the bottom of the ninth, Lewis singled with one out, stole second and third and TU pitcher Hassan Westbrook threw one wild as Lewis scored for the winner.
VSU (12-3) escaped with the win as the upset-minded Night Hawks (9-14) outhit VSU 13-11. Blazer junior
Jeremy Adams (2-1) takes the win in two innings of work, walking one and fanning one. Senior
Alex Tyson pitched four innings, allowing six hits, three earned runs, walked two and fanned three as he relieved senior starter
Tyler Moore after two innings.
Aleywine went 2 for 3 with three runs scored, two home runs and three RBI, while Lewis was 2 for 5 with two runs scored. Christopoulos was 2 for 4 with two RBI and junior
Chase Coker was 2 for 4.
VSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead through the first two innings, before the Night Hawks responded with six-straight runs taking a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the eighth. VSU plated the final three runs of the game for the win.
The Blazers continue at home this weekend as they are set for a three-game series with Gulf South Conference member Lee. The first game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start on Friday evening, followed by a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
