VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 19 Valdosta State men's tennis team's upset bid of No. 10 Lynn came up just short in a 4-3 heartbreaker Sunday at the VSU Tennis Complex. VSU fell to 4-3 on the year, while Lynn improved to 6-1.
The Blazers came out swinging in the doubles portion as top duo and No. 8-ranked senior
Yohan Nguyen and junior
Florian Simbozel won easily over Ryan Neale and Adam Lunding Johansson, 6-0. Sophomore
Robert Cizek and junior
Adam Kalivoda downed Diego Gonzalez and Giovanni Araujo, 6-4 to win the team point at No. 3.
Lynn got on the board with a win at No. 6 as Lucas Flotta won over Kaviloda, 6-3, 6-4, while Simbozel put VSU up 2-1 at No. 2 with a convincing win over Rayane Alami, 6-3, 6-1. In a matchup of two top twenty players, Nguyen, ranked seventh nationally, won at No. 1 in a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 decision over No. 17 Lucca Baptista for a 3-1 VSU lead.
The Fighting Knights used a 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) win from Robin Calais over Mack at No. 3, pulling within 3-2. The Nos. 4 and 5 matches needed three sets as freshman
Edward Etty battled back from a 6-0 loss in the first set at No. 4 for a 6-4 win the second, but Gonzalez finished with a 6-3 win in the decisive set and a 3-3 score.
At No. 5, Cizek on the first set and had a chance to clinch the match, but dropped a 7-5 decision in the second set, forcing the final frame. Araujo won the final set 6-1 to win the match.
The Blazers return to action Tuesday at 3 p.m. versus Auburn Montgomery at the VSU Tennis Complex.
