CAMDEN, S.C. – The Valdosta State men's golf team fired a final round 300 to finish tied for fourth at the 2020 Camden Collegiate Tuesday. VSU tied with Flagler with a 54-hole score of 878 on the par 70, 6,455-yard Camden Country Club course. South Carolina Aiken won the 11-team tournament with an 856 score.
Fellow Gulf South Conference foe Lee finished second with an 864 score, followed by Young Harris at 872. Following the Blazers and Flagler, there was a three-way tie for sixth between North Georgia, GSC member Montevallo and Lander at 880. Piedmont College finished ninth (888), while Greensboro College was tenth with a 904 score. Southern Wesleyan was 11
th with a 923 score.
The scores were a bit elevated on Tuesday from the near-record setting second round Monday as the Blazers carded a 279 which tied for third all-time in program history. All five VSU players fired rounds in the 70s on Tuesday, with sophomore
Gage Smith finishing with a 74. He tied for 16
th to lead the team with a 218 score (72-72-74). As a team, VSU carded rounds of 299, 279 and 300.
The 279 Monday was the best round by a team in the field for the tournament. For Tuesday's round, Lee had the best score of a 287, while USCA had Monday's opening round best score of a 284.
Following Smith, senior
Wesley Hanson finished tied for 19
th with a 219 score on rounds of 73, 70 and 76, while sophomore
Davis Smith finished tied for 36
th on rounds of 82, 67 and 76 for a 225 score. Senior
AJ Ouimet finished the tournament with a 74 to go along with rounds of 76 and 76 for a 226 score and was tied for 42
nd. Freshman
Hayden Smith finished tied for 45
th with a 227 score on rounds of 78, 70 and 79.
USCA had the top two finishers with Bjorn Rosengren finishing 3-under with a 207 score, while teammate Leo Johansson was 1-under with a 209. Lee's Beck Burnette and Flagler's Nic Whittaker tied for third with a 211 score. Georgia Southwestern individual Saksit Jairak and Montevallo's Paul Murphy tied for fifth at 213.
VSU led the field in par 4 scoring at a 4.21 average and was +31 overall. VSU recorded 34 birdies for the tournament to finish third, while recording 149 pars.
Hayden Smith had the most pars for the Blazers with 34, while
Gage Smith tailed a team-high 12 birdies to tie for the lead in the tournament among the 68 participants.
The Blazers return to the course for the UNG Fall Invitational Oct. 26-27, in Gainesville, Ga., at Chattahoochee Golf Club.
