VALDOSTA, Ga. – The No. 36-ranked Valdosta State men's tennis team won 5-2 over visiting University of Montevallo Tuesday afternoon at the VSU Tennis Courts. The Blazers improved to 6-3 on the year and a perfect 4-0 in Gulf South Conference play, while UM fell to 6-5 and 2-2 in league play.
VSU began the match winning two of the three doubles matches to take the early lead. Juniors Alex Holm and
Yohan Nguyen won at the top spot, 6-4, while freshman
Florian Simbozel and junior
Jordi Mas made quick work at No. 2, 6-0. The No. 3 match was outstanding as junior Xavi Pineda and freshman
Robert Cizek battle back from a 5-0 deficit and a 6-5 deficit for a 6-6 score, forcing a tie breaker as UM won the tiebreaker 7-2 for the 7-6 win.
In singles, No. 65 Georg Trompler of Montevallo won at the top spot over Mas, who is ranked 11
th, 7-5 and 6-2 for a 1-1 score. Within minutes of each other, VSU clinched the match as Simbozel won at No. 2, while Pineda won at No. 4 and Holm won at No. 5 all in straight sets. Simbozel won in a second set tiebreak 10-8.
Montevallo's No. 6 player Tobias Rauch won over Cizek, 6-4, 6-4, but Nguyen battled back for a three-set win at No. 3 as he downed Tanguy David 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 for the final 5-2 margin.
The Blazers continue at home this weekend in two huge matches as they host No. 14 West Alabama on Saturday at 9 a.m. and No. 27 West Florida on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the VSU Tennis Courts. VSU and UWF are the lone unbeaten teams in conference play, while UWA is one game behind the Blazers at 3-1.
