Story Links

VALDOSTA, Ga. – Behind two goals from senior Riley Tennant, the Valdosta State women's soccer team posted a thrilling 3-2 victory Sunday versus West Georgia.  VSU improved to 5-4 on the year and 3-2 in Gulf South Conference play, while West Georgia fell to 4-5-1 and 2-3 in league play.

VSU held a 16-6 lead in shots and 11-3 in shots on goal for the match, while UWG had eight saves to VSU's one save.  Both teams had three corner kicks in the contest.

Just 10:10 into the contest, VSU got on the board with a score from sophomore Lauren Hicks for a 1-0 lead.  The Blazers had numerous shots in the half, but UWG goalkeeper Jackie Donaldson was up to the task each time as VSU led 1-0 at intermission.

Tennant scored her first goal for a 2-0 lead just 1:36 into the second half with an assistant from senior Taylor Snell.  The Wolves got on the board just under three minutes later as Madison Cobb scored on an assist from Abigail Smithwick for a 2-1 score.

The Blazers had a great chance for an insurance goal as senior Ashley Lewis and Tennant had a barrage of shots, but Donaldson had the save each time midway through the second half.  UWG's Cole Robertson tied the match in the 81st minute with a score, but Tennant came right back just over two minutes later with her second goal and sixth of the season on an assist from sophomore Kyleigh Reedy for a 3-2 lead.

Tennant had five shots with four on goal and the two scores to lead the team, while Hicks had two shots on goal and a score.  Cobb and Robertson each converted their one shot as both came off the bench for their scores for the Wolves.

VSU continues at home on Friday as it hosts Mississippi College at 7 p.m. and then is scheduled to host Delta State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the VSU Soccer Complex.
