THE LEAD: The Valdosta State volleyball team fought off a pesky Mississippi College squad for a 3-2 victory Friday evening at The Complex. VSU won the first two sets of the match, but saw MC roar back to force a decisive fifth set.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Blazers jumped out to an early 12-3 lead in the first set as they had complete control of the frame early.
- MC pulled within 16-12 on an attack error, but kills from senior Katie McInnis and an ace from senior Chloe Chubilleau pushed the lead back to six at 18-12.
- VSU won the first set 25-18.
- The Blazers then won 10 of the first 15 points in the second set and hit .320 for the set, while holding MC to -.029 for the set as the Choctaws committed 10 miscues and just three for VSU.
- Four serves from freshman Aurora Nero gave VSU a 20-7 lead as the Blazers won the second set 25-14.
- The Choctaws took their first lead of the match on an attack error for a 2-1 lead in the third set as it was much more of a back-and-forth set.
- MC built an 18-13 lead on a kill from Jamie Boros and swelled the lead to 21-13 on another kill from Boros, while settling for a 25-17 win.
- MC hit .519 for the set, while VSU hit .263 as the two teams combined for just five errors in the frame.
- The fourth set saw a match-high 12 ties and four lead changes as neither team could gain much of an advantage.
- VSU lead 11-7 on a kill from senior Lindsey Robinson and then led 17-11, but MC scored six-straight points to tie it at 17.
- The Blazers regained the lead at 18-17 on a kill from freshman Jessie Mooney and VSU had match point on a kill from senior Kayla Widera, but two errors by the Blazers and a kill forced the fifth set.
- Like in the first two sets, VSU jumped out to the early lead scoring six of the first eight points and went on for the 15-7 win.
