90th-Minute Goal Dooms Blazers at Clayton State, 1-0

MORROW, Ga. – With just 19 seconds remaining in regulation, Clayton State's Manoly Baqerizo scored off a corner kick handing Valdosta State a heartbreaking 1-0 setback Sunday evening.
 
THE BASICS:
  • Score: Clayton State 1, Valdosta State 0
  • Records: Clayton State 2-0, Valdosta State 1-1
  • Location: Morrow, Ga. (Laker Field)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Blazers saw numerous chances to score, out-shooting Clayton State 5-2 in shots on goal in the first half.
  • VSU's junior Ashley Lewis and sophomore Paige Taylor each had shots early, while Blazer goalkeeper Caroline Embler tallied two saves in the opening half.
  • Early in the second half, Embler saw a barrage of shots by the Lakers, but was up to the task.
  • The Blazers had back-to-back corner kicks in the 81st minute as senior Suvi Savolainen's shot sailed high.  
  • Clayton State was awarded a penalty kick in the 84th minute, but Embler came up with a huge save preserving the scoreless tie. 
  • Baquerizo received a yellow card and then found the back of the net off her own corner kick at the 89:41 mark for the game winner.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  •  For the game, VSU tallied 12 shots with eight on frame, while Lewis led the team with three shots and two on goal.
  • Baquerizo had two shots on goal for Clayton State.
  • Both teams had five corner kicks, while Embler made four saves and Clayton State had eight saves in the contest.
 
UP NEXT:
  • The Blazers return home to host Florida Southern in a huge regional contest Friday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. at the VSU Soccer Complex.
  • VSU then travels to Florida Tech for another big regional match, Sunday, Sept. 9.
