Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader With Montevallo

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State baseball team ended the weekend on a high note after bouncing back from a 4-0 loss to take game two with a 5-2 win over Montevallo in Gulf South Conference doubleheader action on Sunday at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.

Montevallo struck early in game one after manufacturing a run with a leadoff single and a stolen base by Collin Dupree. Jason Cryer moved the runner to third with a ground out to the right side, before Caleb Ledbetter plated UM's leadoff hitter with an RBI grounder to second base.

Despite six innings of two-hit baseball by Blazer pitcher Hunter Jones, the Blazer bats were unable to produce a timely hit in the game, which resulted in a complete-game win for Montevallo's Cas Silber, who improved to 7-3 on the year. Logan Elliott, who started the game on the hill and gave the Blazers one inning in the first, was tagged with the loss.

In game two, VSU fell behind again early after an unearned Falcon run in the first. The Blazer bats gave pitcher Cooper Cain a boost, however, and negated the early run with a big offensive inning in the second.

Luke Suchon sparked the frame with a leadoff double to right field, and a sacrifice bunt attempt turned into a base hit for freshman Carson McCullers on the ensuing at bat. With two aboard, Andrew Williamson plated both runners when he ripped a two-run double to right center. Williamson proceeded to move up on a passed ball, and he came in to score on an O'Kevius Conway infield grounder to give the Blazers a 3-1 advantage.

The Blazers gave up an additional run in the fourth, but fired right back with a sacrifice fly by Suchon in the fifth. Williamson and Conway teamed up again in the sixth for VSU's final run, as Williamson doubled for the second time before Conway drove him in with an RBI single to put VSU up 5-2.

The victory in game two belonged to Cain, who improved to 4-2 on the season with a 5.0 inning effort that included eight strikeouts. Ricky Miranda secured the save for his second of the season.

Valdosta State improved to 13-22 on the year with the split and lifted their GSC record to 7-13. Montevallo slid to 27-12 overall and 13-7 against league opponents.

The Blazers will return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference road matchup against Saint Leo in St. Leo, Fla. First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
