PENSACOLA, Fla. -The Valdosta State baseball team was afforded an unexpected extension to their 2018 campaign with three extra frames on Sunday afternoon before claiming an 11-9 victory and a series win over the West Florida Argonauts in Gulf South Conference action in Pensacola, Fla.
Valdosta State jumped out to a big lead in the third inning and snapped a 1-1 tie with a barrage of seven base hits. Six Blazers singled in the frame, and Andrew Williamson put the exclamation point on the inning when he ripped a run-scoring double for one of his two hits on the day. His RBI marked one of three for the junior on Sunday afternoon and helped facilitate a 7-1 advantage for the Blazers.
Over the next six innings, West Florida clawed back into the game with three runs in the fifth, two in the eighth, and a game-saving run in the bottom of the ninth.
Following a scoreless 10th for both sides, the resilient Blazers used a pair of solo shots in the 11th off the bats of Williamson and Aaron Haughton. The lead was short-lived for VSU, however, as the Argonauts fired back with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly to tie the game up and send it to the 12th.
The Blazers refused to settle and bounced back with a decisive 12th inning, which included an RBI single by Dalton Murray and another RBI for Haughton, who doubled to center field to score Murray from first. Both of VSU's runs came with two outs.
With the 11-9 advantage, Head Coach
Greg Guilliams sent Cooper Cain to the hill, and after allowing a leadoff single, the sophomore induced a fly ball to center and double play to short to retire the Argonauts and pick up the save with a scoreless 12th.
Ricky Miranda, who came on in relief for the Blazers in the ninth, scored the victory after 2.2 innings of work. The win lifted Miranda to 2-1 on the year.
Valdosta State concluded their season at 20-26 overall. The win for Coach Guilliams was a historic one, as it marked the 1,000th victory of his collegiate coaching career.
