Baseball Routs Shorter to Take Series With 13-2 Win

VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Valdosta State baseball team outscored Shorter 13-2 for the second time in as many days to claim a Gulf South Conference series win over the Hawks on Sunday afternoon at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.

Shorter opened up the scoring in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice fly by Victor Perez, but the Blazers took complete control of the game in the bottom of the third with six runs on four hits.

O'Kevius Conway led off the big inning with a walk, before Kendall Herron followed with a single to place runners at the corners. In the ensuing at bat, DJ King plated VSU's first run with a single to right field, and Dalton Murray added a walk to keep the chain moving. With the bases loaded, Nick Koslowski gave the Blazers a 2-0 lead with an infield single, and BJ White gave himself a senior day to remember with a grand slam over the wall in left field to put VSU on top 6-1.

One inning later, the Blazers capitalized on two Shorter errors with three hits for four additional runs. Murray, Koslowski, and Elias Macias each singled in the inning, and each hit drove in one run, resulting in a 10-1 lead for VSU after four.

Shorter got one run back in the top of the seventh, but not before the Blazers added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth on three walks, a run-scoring double by King, and a two-run triple by Macias.

Logan Dubbe, now 2-4 on the year, scored the win in the mercy-rule win after allowing just four hits in six innings of work. The senior struck out four, and Shorter's only run against Dubbe was unearned.

Valdosta State outscored the Hawks 29-11 over the course of the three game series to improve to 17-25 on the year and 10-16 in GSC play. Meanwhile, the Hawks fell to 22-23 and saw their league record drop to 10-17.

The Blazers will continue their season on Wednesday, April 25th, with a home matchup against Thomas University at 5:00 p.m.
