JACKSON, Tenn. - The Valdosta State baseball team ended their road trip on a high note with a dominant 9-4 victory over the Union Bulldogs in the weekend Gulf South Conference series finale on Saturday in Jackson, Tenn.
Cooper Cain delivered a gutsy 8-inning outing that included 10 strikeouts and just three runs allowed. Cain's win, during which he scattered seven hits, lifted him to a 3-1 record on the 2018 season. In the ninth, Call Graham, Quinton Forrester, and Ricky Miranda teamed up to close out the contest and secure the victory for the red and black.
Valdosta State's offense racked up 15 hits in the game, three of which came from Dalton Murray. In fact, Murray was one triple shy of hitting for the cycle in the game, and he was joined by Nick Koslowski, Aaron Haughton, Carson McCullers, and Cody Harwell as one of five Blazers to post multiple hits in the game.
Harwell, a sophomore who normally serves as a relief pitcher for the Blazers, became the story of the day. Due to an injury-plagued roster, the Valdosta native was wedged into a starting role throughout the weekend at first base and answered the call with two hits and four RBI's in the finale. The lefty is now 2-for-7 on the season with a double and three total bases. His effort on Saturday helped the Blazers score in five of the nine innings in the final game of the weekend.
The win lifted VSU to 12-16 overall on the year and propelled the Blazers to a 6-9 record against Gulf South Conference opponents. Meanwhile, Union slipped to 10-19 overall and fell to 5-10 in conference play.
The Blazers will return to action on Tuesday against the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes. The contest is slated for a 5:00 p.m. first pitch at Billy Grant Field in Valdosta, Ga.
