MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Valdosta State rebounded from a tough start to Friday's Gulf South Conference baseball doubleheader with a win in the nightcap against the Warhawks of Auburn Montgomery in Montgomery, Ala.
In the opening matchup, Valdosta overcame an early 1-0 deficit with runs scored in both the second and third innings. BJ White homered for the second straight day in the top half of the second to tie the game at 1-1, and Kendall Herron slugged his second career home run in the next inning to put VSU on top 2-1.
The lead held for the Blazers until the bottom of the seventh, when an error in right field allowed an unearned run to cross for AUM. One inning later, the Warhawks broke the game open with a pair of eighth inning long balls, one of which plated three runs to put Auburn Montgomery in front 6-2.
The Blazers fired back in the top of the tenth with an Elias Macias double and a homer off the bat of O'Kevius Conway, but Auburn-Montgomery managed to stop it there and hold the Blazers at bay for the 6-4 win. Logan Dubbe suffered the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season, while AUM's Hank Scott scattered nine hits to limit VSU's damage and improve to 4-2.
In game two, Dalton Murray came alive with a 3-for-3 effort to help propel the Blazers to victory. The senior's biggest blow of the game came in the third, when he delivered a bases-loaded triple to put Valdosta State on top 3-2.
In the sixth, both Elias Macias and Blake Seeley added to Murray's productivity at the plate with RBI base hits of their own. The two runs padded the Blazers' lead and gave reliever Ricky Miranda an opportunity to relieve starter Cooper Cain for his first save of the season.
Cain was fantastic and struck out ten batters in the game while allowing just four hits and two earned runs. The victory improved the sophomore to 2-1 on the season, while Auburn Montgomery's Chase Gunter fell to 0-2 on the year.
The split moved the Blazers to 10-15 overall and shifted team's record up to 4-8 against Gulf South Conference opponents. The Warhawks, meanwhile, moved to 11-12 overall and 4-8 against league opponents.
Valdosta State will return to action on Tuesday at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park in Valdosta, Ga. The Blazers will host Tampa at 5:00 p.m. EST on March 20th, with full coverage of the game to be provided at www.vstateblazers.com.
