VALDOSTA, Ga. - Valdosta State baseball used some late-inning dramatics for a walkoff 3-2 win in game one, and the momentum carried into game two for a 9-2 rout of the Embry-Riddle Eagles in a Saturday non-conference doubleheader at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park in Valdosta, Ga.
The Blazers trailed 2-1 in the eighth inning of the first game, but Dalton Murray sparked a game-saving rally with a one-out single down the left field line. Murray proceeded to steal second base two batters later, and Luke Suchon delivered a clutch double to left to plate Murray and tie the score at 2-2.
John Mason came on in the ninth and retired six of the next seven batters he faced to set the stage for a dramatic finish. Mack Hathcock drew a walk with one out to represent the potential game-winning run. Dalton Duty drew a walk two batters later to advance Hathcock to second, and Suchon struck again with a walkoff single down the left field line.
Valdosta State went right back to it in game two, giving winning pitcher Hunter Jones more than enough to work with after scoring nine runs on eight hits and two Eagle errors. The Blazers scored at least one run in four of their six offensive half innings, and Max Abramson put the exclamation point on the day with a three-run blast in the bottom of the sixth.
Abramson finished the day with six RBI's, all of which came in game two. Meanwhile, Suchon went 3-for-5 at the dish over the course of the two games and posted four RBI's of his own. Jones, a senior righty for the Blazers this season, claimed the victory after allowing just three hits in 5.1 innings of work.
With the Saturday sweep, the Blazers lifted their record to 2-1 on the young season, while the Eagles fell to 2-2 overall.
Valdosta State will return to the diamond with another home game on Tuesday, February 1st, against the visiting Golden Rams of Albany State. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
