Baseball Edged Out by Georgia Southwestern, 4-3

AMERICUS, Ga. - Aaron Haughton and Andrew Williamson belted back-to-back homers in the top of the fourth inning, but Georgia Southwestern overtook the Valdosta State baseball team in the fifth for a 4-3 non-conference win in Americus, Ga. on Wednesday.

The Blazers drew first blood in the top of the second inning when Nick Koslowski produced an infield single and moved up to third on a GSW error on a Williamson grounder to shortstop. With runners at the corners, BJ White lifted a sacrifice fly to left to give VSU an early 1-0 lead.

The advantage was negated in the bottom of the third inning, when the Hurricanes used three hits, including a double, to plate two runs. Valdosta State fired back, however, with the aforementioned pair of solo shots in the fourth inning, both of which came with two outs to put VSU on top 3-2.

Georgia Southwestern put the final runs of the game across in the bottom of the fifth, as the Hurricanes sent seven batters to the plate on two hits and an error. A sacrifice fly in the half inning scored the deciding run, and neither team scored again for the rest of the contest.

Tristan Cone suffered the loss on the hill for the Blazers and fell to 1-1 on the season. As a team, Valdosta State fell to 6-9 overall. The Hurricanes improved to 3-9 with the victory.

Valdosta State returns to Gulf South Conference action on Saturday with a league matchup on the road against West Alabama. The series will kick off on Saturday in Livingston, Ala. with a doubleheader against the Tigers at 3:00 p.m. EST.
