VALDOSTA, Ga. - Despite some late-inning defensive miscues, the Valdosta State baseball team refused to fold and picked up an extra-inning 6-5 victory over Barry on Sunday afternoon to take the three-game series on a beautiful day at Billy Grant Field at Tommy Thomas Park.
Hunter Jones gave the Blazers an incredible outing as the starter of the series finale. The senior tossed seven scoreless innings while striking out six and allowing just two hits to the Buccanneers on the day. Barry negated Jones' bid for a win, however, after loading the bases in the top of the ninth and tying the game on a three-base error in right field off the bat of Alexis Monge. After misplaying the ball, BJ White recovered in right field and started a relay to the plate through O'Kevius Conway, which cut down Monge's attempt to round the bases.
One inning later, the Bucs used two base hits and two errors to score two more runs and take a 5-3 lead, but the Blazers would not be denied. The extra frame belonged to the Blazers after Dalton Murray, DJ King, and Nick Koslowski delivered three straight hits in the bottom of the 10th to pull VSU to within one at 5-4. Luke Suchon laid down a gutsy sacrifice bunt with two strikes to move King and Koslowski into scoring position, and Max Abramson put the exclamation point on the game with a walkoff two-run single to left center field.
Cooper Cain scored the win after coming on in relief in the top of the 10th, and King highlighted the Blazers' offensive effort with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, including a two-run homer, in his debut as a Blazer.
The win lifted VSU to an even .500 at 5-5 on the season, while the Bucs fell to 3-6 overall. Cain's win marked the first of the season for the sophomore and improved him to 2-0.
Valdosta State will be back at it on Wednesday with a road trip to Augusta. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m., and the game will be carried live on the Blazer Radio Network. Look for coverage links at www.vstateblazers.com.
